Early use cases for open badges often focused on recognizing learners’ skills, activities, or performances. However, learners crave connection and community. If we are not careful, badges could damage learners’ sense of community by commoditizing learning. But we can purposefully consider how to use badges to build, enable, and strengthen learning communities by developing identity, reciprocation, vision, and shared activity. I ask us to consider how badges can build these important communities.
