While 59.1% of White adults (age 25 to 64) in Colorado completed a degree or other credential, this number is a lot lower for minority adults in the state. In 2021, the Community College System (CCCS) received a grant from the Lumina Foundation to address this gap. The main goal of this grant is to increase credential attainment for enrolled Black, Hispanic, and Native American adults at CCCS colleges by 2% by 2023.

In the CU system, the graduation rate is between 43-68% for our undergraduate students. This number is much lower for minoritized students. There are various contributing factors: 1) gateway courses; 2) opportunity gaps; and 3) first and last mile challenges (sense of belonging and missing credit hours). We are exploring opportunities for bridging this gap including converting experiences into credentials to address graduation challenges and preparing students for the future of work.
